1. World Cancer Day 2017: February 4
  • The World Cancer Day (WCD) is observed every year on 4 February across the world to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. 
  • The tagline (theme) between 2016 and 2018 World Cancer Day is “We can. I can”
  • It reflects on what everyone can do to raise awareness of cancer and asks to take pledge and action in fight against cancer. 
  • Special three-year campaign for the World Cancer Day 2016-2018 seeks to explore how everyone- as individuals or as a collective – can do their part to reduce the burden of cancer globally.
2. Three-day mega Visakha Utsav kickstarts in Visakhapatnam: 
  • The three-day Visakha Utsav was inaugurated by M. Venkaiah Naidu, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development, in Visakhapatnam on 3 February 2017.
  • The state festival, comprising various cultural events is being held at the port city’s Rama Krishna Beach. 
  • The kick-off day saw in attendance various notable figures from the state ministry such as the HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas, Zilla Parishad Chairperson Lalam Bhavani and MLAs V. Anita, Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar, Palla Srinvasa Rao and P. Vishnu Kumar Raju.
  • Visakha Utsav is an annual festival that aims to bring out the rich culture and tradition of Andhra Pradesh and to promote the brand image of Visakhapatnam.
3. India together with Norway Develops Body to Accelerate Research for Epidemics:
  • A Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has been set up by India and Norway to speed up the research and development for epidemics.
  • The body was created after the World Health Organization published a document titled ‘An R&D blueprint for action to prevent epidemics- funding and coordination models for preparedness and response’ and asked all the member nations to develop research and development plan to deal with epidemics.
  • The body will make the list of the diseases against which vaccines are most feasible. This will overcome the barriers for development of vaccines.
4. Google Ranked top Brand among Global 500 Brands:
  • In the latest Global 500 rankings of most valuable and powerful brands across the globe,  Sundar Pichai’s Google has surpassed Apple to achieve the top position.
  • The Brand Finance Global 500 list published on February 2, 2017 had featured Apple as the top brand for continuous five years.
  • However, for 2017, the ranking revealed that Google’s brand value rose by 24 percent to $109.5bn in 2016. 
  • This is for the first time since 2011 that Google has been placed at the top spot. The third place has been occupied by Amazon.
5. Rail Museum celebrates 40th anniversary:
  • The National Rail Museum in New Delhi celebrated its 40th anniversary on 01st February 2017. 
  • The museum, which houses a large collection of life-size rail exhibits, allows visitors to take a tour on a toy train. 
  • Its attractions include the saloons of the Maharajas of Indore and Mysore and Fairy Queen, the oldest working steam locomotive still in operation.
6. Centre of Integrative Oncology inaugurated in New Delhi:
  • The Centre of Integrative Oncology (CIO) was inaugurated by Dr. Saumya Swaminathan, Secretary, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare & Director General, Indian Council for Medical Research and Shri Ajit M. Sharan, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH at the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research  (NICPR) at Noida on the 3rd  February, 2017.
  • Sharan also launched the fellowship programme, under this Senior Research Fellowships and 5 Post-doctoral fellowships will be released every year (in both modern medicine and Ayurveda) to facilitate quality research in the country in the area of cancer research.
  • The aim of the CIO is to build collaborations in the areas of cancer prevention, research and care in an integrated approach involving both modern and traditional medicine.
7. IDFC MD Vikram Limaye the new CEO, MD of NSE:
  • Leading stock exchange National Stock Exchange (NSE) on 03rd February 2017 has selected IDFC chief Vikram Limaye as its new CEO and Managing Director, two months after the sudden exit of Chitra Ramkrishna from the top post.
  • NSE's board approved Limaye's name for the top position but a formal announcement would be made later as some formalities need to be completed from his side. 
  • The approval of the board, chaired by Ashok Chawla, comes after a four-member search panel suggested Limaye's name from amongst the shortlisted candidates.
8. Scientists confirm existence of lost continent under the Indian Ocean:
  • Scientists recently discovered the existence of a “lost continent” under Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.
  • The continent is reportedly a leftover piece from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, which broke apart about 200 million years ago, leading to the creation of landmasses that are recognised today as South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, the Arabian peninsula and the Indian subcontinent.
  • The lost continent seems to be a tiny part of the ancient continent that broke off from the island of Madagascar when the other parts broke off and formed the Indian Ocean.
9. UIDAI clamps down on 50 fraud sites offering Aadhaar services:
  • In a massive crackdown on unauthorised agencies offering Aadhaar-related services illegally and charging excessive money from the public, UIDAI has got shut down 12 such websites and 12 mobile apps available on the Google Playstore.
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has further directed authorities for closure of another 26 such fraudulent and illegal websites and mobile applications. 
  • “Some websites and mobile apps were luring citizens to share their basic information and Aadhaar number under the pretext of getting them Aadhaar card or offering other Aadhaar related services. 
10. Virat Kohli features on Wisden 2017 cover:
  • Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been featured on the cover of the 2017 edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
  • The image used was Kohli playing a reverse-sweep in a Test match.
  • Wisden Cricketers' Almanack also called the ‘Bible of cricket', Almanack has been running for 153 years now.
11. Pankaj Advani Wins 29th the National Snooker Championship title:
  • Indian cueist Pankaj Advani clinched his 29th Indian National Snooker Championship title at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Pune.
  • The World Champion defeated Pandurangaiah of Railways 6-0 in a one-sided final.
  • With this win, Advani has become the only Indian player to win all the national titles in both the long and short formats of snooker, 6-red Snooker and 15-red Snooker.
12. Former CBI chief Joginder Singh passes away:
  • Former CBI chief Joginder Singh, who oversaw investigation of several high-profile cases including Bofors scam and Bihar's fodder scam, has passed away at aged 77 years.
  • Family sources said he breathed his last on 04th February 2017 after the prolonged illness.
  • The 1961 batch IPS officer of Karnataka cadre was chosen to head the premier investigative agency when H D Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister.
