1. Mysuru gets India’s 1st post office passport kendra:
  • The Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar inaugurated India’s first Post  Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) at Metagalli post office in Mysuru which will offer all passport related services.
  • The second POPSK simultaneously opened in Gujarat. The POPSK has been launched to expand the passport services over a wide area and simplify the process to travel abroad.
2. Havildar Hangpan Dada honored with Ashok Chakra posthumously:
  • The President of India Pranab Mukherjee has approved 398 Gallantry and other defense awards to personnel of Indian armed forces.
  • These awards include Ashok Chakra (1), Kirit Chakras (2), Shaurya Chakras (12), 3 Bar 50 Sena Medal, Sena Medal (91), Vayusena medals ( 4) and Nao Sena medal (2).
  • Ashok Chakra (highest peace time gallantry award) to Rashtriya Rifles martyr Havildar Hangpan Dada (from Arunachal) for sacrificing his life for the nation, his wife Changsen received the award during the 68th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi.
  • Dada killed four terrorists at the height of 13,000 feet in the harsh and icy Himalayan range of North Kashmir before laying down his life on 26th May, 2016.
3. AAI launches new system to manage air traffic:
  • On the occasion of on 26 January 2017 68th Republic Day, The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has launched the Central - Air Traffic Flow Management (C-ATFM), a system designed to cut flight delay.
  • The launch was marked by AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, who opened the dedicated CATFM facility at Delhi's new Air Traffic Services Complex. 
  • This system will be implemented by the authority itself at all the major airports and it will go on to cover the entire Indian airspace.
4. National Geoscience award for Keshav Krishna:
  • A scientist at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) Keshav Krishna has been selected for the National Geoscience Award - 2016.
  • The award given by the Union Ministry of Mines is in recognition of his work in the field of geoenvironmental studies.
  • Now, Krishna is involved in studies on environmental risk assessment related heavy metal contamination in soil, sediments, and water in industrial areas.
5. Jeevan Raksha Padak Awards 2016 announced:
  • The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards 2016 on 36 persons which includes Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 05 persons, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 08 persons and Jeevan Raksha Padk to 23 persons, 07 awards are posthumous.
  • Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of humane nature in saving the life of a person. 
  • The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak. Persons of either sex in all walks of life are eligible for these awards. The award can also be conferred posthumously.
6. Gujarat ranks 1st in Walnut’s cashless score card:
  • Gujarat ranked first in the `Cashless India Scorecard’ prepared by Walnut app to track the growth of digital payments in the country.
  • The scorecard is meant for comparing how each state is moving towards a cashless economy post- demonetisation based on an aggregate and anonymised analysis of Walnut’s over five million user data.
  • It ranked States based on percentage increase in overall cashless transactions, growth in shoppers using debit or credit card for the first time and growth in merchants accepting digital payments.
  • Based on these parameters, Gujarat, Telangana and Haryana emerged as the top three states with the highest growth in going cashless.
7. Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan resigns: 
  • Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan ( 67-year) has resigned after a controversy was triggered by reports in local media accused him of sexual misconduct.
  • Earlier, around 100 Raj Bhavan staff had alleged that Shanmuganathan had seriously compromised the dignity of the Raj Bhavan and made it a ‘young ladies club’.
  • Mr. Shanmuganathan took over as the Governor of Meghalaya in May 2015 and an additional charge of Arunachal Pradesh since November 2016.
8. Kerala CM Inaugurates e-Health Kerala scheme at Peroorkada Hospital:
  • The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan launched the IT Project, e-Health Kerala which is named Jeevan Rekha , at Peroorkada Model Government Hospital
  • The project has been developed by the Health Department in association with the state IT Mission. 
  • It aims to create a centralized database that will have the complete healthcare records of all the citizens in the state through the digitization of government hospitals.
9. Arunachal launches ‘Dulari Kanya’ scheme to check infant mortality:
  • Arunachal Pradesh launched ‘Dulari Kanya’, a special scheme to check infant mortality in the state.
  • Governor V Shanmuganathan launched the scheme, under which the government will deposit Rs 20,000 in the bank account of a girl child, born in any government hospital.
  • It would be paid along with the accrued interest after she attains 18 years of her age.
10. G.N. Rao to be inducted into Ophthalmology Hall of Fame:
  • Gullapalli N. Rao, a noted Indian eye doctor, has been selected to the 2017 Ophthalmology Hall of Fame instituted by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
  • The founder and chair of the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, Rao will be honoured at the induction ceremony in Los Angeles on May 6 at the annual meeting of the ASCRS.
  • The Hall of Fame honours pioneers in ophthalmology for their distinguished careers and contributions, with the physicians selected by their peers – more than 30,000 ophthalmologists across the world.
11. Assam Govt to organize Farmer's Martyrs day:
  • The Assam government has organized  Farmer's Martyr day (two-day event) at Patharughat in Darrang district for the first time.
  • On this occasion, the chief minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal has given awards to 22 progressive farmers.
  • Various programs will be held including training programs, exhibition, and seminars.
12. Andhra Pradesh to host Partnership Summit:
  • Andhra Pradesh is hosting two- day 23rd edition of the Partnership Summit at Visakhapatnam for the second consecutive year.
  • The event being organized in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Various plenary sessions, focusing on the theme 'Partnerships for Sustained Growth in an Emerging Global Economic Order' will be held as part of the event.
13. . AIFF launches India’s first ever Women’s Football Professional League:
  • All India Football Federation (AIFF) has launched the Women’s Professional League (WPL) in New Dehli. The WPL is the first ever such league in the country. 
  • The league was launched by AIFF President Praful Patel in the presence of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel and the 2016 Summer Olympics wrestling bronze medalist Sakshi Malik.
14. Usain Bolt loses one Olympic gold medal as Nesta Carter tests positive:
  • Usain Bolt will have to hand back one of his nine Olympic gold medals after Jamaican teammate Nesta Carter tested positive for a banned substance.
  • Carter was part of the Jamaican quartet that won the 4x100m in Beijing in 2008.
  • Earlier, Nesta Carter has been found to contain the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.
15. Australian Open: Mattek-Sands and Safarova win women's doubles title:
  • The 2nd seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova has beat Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic and China's Peng Shuai 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-3 to win the women’s doubles final at the Australian Open.
  • It was their fourth major title together, and ninth overall.
