1. Kannada film "Thithi" wins top award in Shanghai film festival:
  • Kannada film 'Thithi' has won the best film award and best script writers award at the Asia New Talent Awards in the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival.
  • The director, Raam Reddy has made his debut through this film.
  • It is the only Indian film that has been selected for screening in the festival of Shanghai.
  • "Thithi" has already been screened in over 12 international and national film festivals and won 13 awards.
2. PM Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President inaugurate Duraiappah stadium in Jaffna:
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena have inaugurated Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna which was renovated by India.
  • Sri Lankan President Sirisena was present at the stadium in Jaffna while PM Narendra Modi joined the event through video-conferencing from New Delhi.
  • The newly renovated Duraiappah Stadium has been named in honour of a former Mayor of Jaffna late Alfred Thambirajah Duraiappah. The Indian government has renovated the stadium at a cost of over 7 crore rupees which has the seating capacity of 1,850.
3. Govt approves 100% FDI in aviation, defence, e-commerce:
  • The government has permitted 100 per cent FDI in civil defence, aviation, animal husbandry and trading, including through e-commerce, in respect of food products manufactured or produced in India.
Defence Sector: Present FDI regime in this sector permits 49% FDI participation in the equity of a company under automatic route. FDI limit also has been made applicable to Manufacturing of Small Arms and Ammunitions covered under Arms Act, 1959.
Aviation Sector: 100% FDI under automatic route in Greenfield and Brownfield Airport Projects to aid in modernization of the existing airports to establish a high standard.
Single Brand Retail Trading: Entities undertaking single brand retail trading have been relaxed from local sourcing norms up to 3 years.

4. International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence:
  • First International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict was observed on 19 June 2016. 
  • The day was observed to raise awareness for the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence.
5. World Refugee Day observed on 20 June:
  • It is observed annually to draw attention to the plight of refugees, celebrate their courage and resilience and renew commitment to solving refugee problems.
  • The UN General Assembly via its resolution 55/76 on 4 December 2000 decided to observe the World Refugee Day on 20 June every year.
6. NASA unveils X-57 Hybrid Electric Research Plane:
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on 17 June 2016 unveiled the iconic X-57 Hybrid Electric Research Plane nicknamed as Maxwell.
  • The artist's concept of the X-57 shows the plane's specially designed wing and 14 electric motors.
  • NASA Aeronautics researchers will use the Maxwell to demonstrate that how electric propulsion can make planes quieter, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
7. Punjab Government launches Mukh Mantri Punjab Hepatitis C Relief Fund:
  • The Punjab government has launched a special fund "Mukh Mantri Punjab Hepatitis C Relief Fund" to provide free treatment for patients affected by Hepatitis C.
  • Punjab became the first Indian state to provide free treatment to confirmed cases of Hepatitis C.
  • 20 crore rupees fund will provide all the residents of Punjab affected by Hepatitis C free treatment.
  • The scheme is considered important in the public health measures of the state as the prevalence rate of patients affected by Hepatitis could be as high as 3%.
8. India, Thailand signed 2 agreements:
  • India and Thailand signed two agreements that are aimed at enhancing cooperation in culture as well as educational sectors.
  • The agreements were signed in New Delhi during the 3-day visit of Thailand Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha that concluded on 18 June 2016.
9. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's statue unveiled in Malaysia:
  • A bronze statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose has been unveiled at the Indian cultural centre premises in Malaysia in the presence of nine Indian National Army (INA) veterans.
  • It was announced during the last year visit of PM Modi to Malaysia. At that time, he has also announced the renaming of Indian Cultural Centre as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre.
  • The bust was unveiled by the traditional lighting of the lamp which was sculpted by Ram Sutar and sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
10. 106-year-old Aida Gemanque becomes oldest Olympic torch bearer:
  • world’s oldest skydiver, Aida Gemanque (106-year) has become the oldest Olympic torch bearer on 18 June 2016 when she carried the flame in the Amazonian city of Macapa, aged 106.
  • She broke the record formerly held by Alexander Kaptarenko, who was 101 when he took part in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics relay
  • The 95-day torch relay will pass through 325 Brazilian cities and involve some 12,000 runners before ending at Rio’s Maracana Stadium for the lighting of the Olympic cauldron on August 5.
11. Former Cricketer Chetan Chauhan as named NIFT Chairman:
  • Former BJP MP Chetan Chauhan, who had played Test cricket for India, has been appointed as the Chairman of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
  • NIFT, the premier fashion institute was set up in 1986 and has centres across the country.
  • It comes under the Union Ministry of Textiles.
12. Nico Rosberg wins 2016 European Grand Prix of F1:
  • Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg from Germany has won the 2016 European Grand Prix of Formula One.
  • The race was run on a street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • It was Rosberg’s overall ninetieth championship title of F1 in his career and the fifth win in the 2016 season.
  • Earlier he had won Australian Grand Prix, Bahrain Grand Prix, Chinese Grand Prix and Russian Grand Prix in the 2016 season.
13.  India wins Silver medal at Archery World Cup in Antalya:
  • The Indian mixed recurve team of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das has won the silver medal at the Archery World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
  • In the final match Indian team lost to South Korea by 1-5 score at Konyaalti Beach Park.
  • The Archery World Cup is a competition started in 2006. It is organized by the World Archery Federation.
14. Australia won Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016:
  • Australia has won the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016 at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London.
  • It defeated India 1-0 in a shoot-out.
  • With this victory, Australia claimed the Champions Trophy title for the 14th time. While, Germany defeated Great Britain to win the bronze medal.
15. Sri Lankan pacer Shaminda Eranga suspended by ICC for illegal action:
  • International Cricket Council  has suspended Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Shaminda Eranga from bowling.
  • He was suspended after an assessment of his bowling action. But he can play domestic cricket in Sri Lanka, with the consent of the country’s cricket board.
  • The assessment revealed that all deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.
16. Renowned Educationalist Jeppiaar passes away:
  • Renowned politician-turned-educationalist and founder of Jeppiaar Educational Trust Jeppiaar Pangiraj (85-year) has passed away due to brief illness at Chennai.
  • He had a law degree from Madras University following which he pursued a Master of Arts degree from Mysore University and a his doctoral degree in Anna University on Water Resource Management.
  • He was a pioneer in the setting up of private engineering institutions in Tamil Nadu.
  • In 1987, he founded the Sathyabama Engineering College which later became Sathyabama University.
