1. World's longest and deepest rail tunnel, inaugurated in Switzerland:
  • Switzerland on 1 June 2016 inaugurated Gotthard Base Tunnel, world’s longest and deepest railway tunnel. The tunnel is also the first flat low-level route through the Alps.
  • It took 17 years and 12.2 billion Swiss francs to construct the tunnel.
  • The Gotthard Base Tunnel has route length of 57.09 km and a total of 151.84 km of tunnels, shafts and passages.
  • It is a part of the AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA).
2. Flipkart introduces online 'No Cost EMI' option:
  • E-commerce giant Flipkart has introduced 'No Cost EMI' option to make online shopping affordable for high-end purchases through an attractive financing option of equated monthly installments (EMI) where customers will not bear additional cost. 
  • This step has been taken in association with Bajaj Finserv. 
  • Flipkart's 'No Cost EMI' entails zero processing fee, zero down payment and zero interest for customers.
3. BS Bassi appointed as UPSC Member:
  •  The President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Bhim Sain Bassi, IPS (Retd) as a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • He will hold the constitutional post till February 2021, from the day when he enters the office.
  • He is an officer of Indian Police Service of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre of 1977 batch.
  • He has retired as Delhi Police chief on 29 February 2016.
4. Delhi Govt Launches 'DVAT M SEWA' Mobile App:
  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched a mobile app through which city traders can register themselves with the VAT department of Delhi government, a move that is aimed at encouraging them to boost its tax collection.
  • The 'DVAT M SEWA' app, traders won't be required to submit the application for registration at the department's office and all they have to do now is to fill the form online.
5. Comedian Razak Khan passes away:
  • Razak Khan, one of the best comedians of Bollywood movies, passed away on 1 June 2016 following a cardiac arrest in Bandra, Mumbai.
  • He made his Bollywood debut in 1993 with Boney Kapoor's production venture Roop ki Rani Choron Ka Raja.
  • Razak was last seen in TV show Comedy Nights With Kapil.
6. Government raises retirement age of doctors to 65:
  • The Prime Minister has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for enhancing the age of superannuation of all doctors of the Central Health Service to 65 years with effect from 31st May 2016.
  • This will enable the Government to retain experienced doctors for a longer period, and to provide better services in its public health facilities, particularly to the poorest, who are entirely dependent on public facilities.
  • As of now, the retirement age of doctors in government hospitals 62 years and 60 years in others hospitals.
7. India and Morocco launch Chamber of Commerce and Industry:
  • India and Morocco on 31 May 2016 launched the India-Morocco Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IMCCI) in Rabat, Morocco.
  • The chamber was jointly launched by visiting Vice President Hamid Ansari and Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane.
  • The IMCCI was launched to accelerate the pace of economic development between the two nations.
8. India and World Bank sign agreement for efficient bus service:
  • The Government of India and the World Bank has signed a 9.2 million US dollar grant agreement under the World Bank-Global Environment Facility (GEF) Programme for the Efficient and Sustainable City Bus Service Project.
  • The project aims to improve the efficiency of the transport and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in selected Indian cities which includes- Chandigarh, Jaipur and Mira Bhayandar municipality in the Thane district of Maharashtra.
  • The IBRD will be the implementing agency of the GEF for the project. The total cost of the programme is $113 million, out of which $9.2 million will come as a grant from the World Bank and $103.07 million will be funded by the Centre, state and city governments for the funding of buses and ancillary infrastructure.
9. Bharti Airtel names Shashi Arora as new CEO, MD of Airtel Payments Bank :
  • Airtel Payments Bank has appointed Shashi Arora as the CEO & Managing Director of the company, subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India .
  • He will replace Manish Khera .
10. Asia's largest tech trade show COMPUTEX kicks off in Taipei:
  •  Asia’s largest technology trade show COMPUTEX has kicked off in Taipei, Taiwan on 31st of May.
  • The show will be held for 5 consecutive days, with 1,602 exhibitors, from more than 1,600 companies from 30 countries using 5,009 booth spaces to showcase their latest products.
  • The trade show has been organized by TAITRA ( Taiwan External Trade Development Council ) and TCA (Taipei Computer Association). The trade show has 4 main themes that focuses on : IoT applications, innovations and startups, business solutions, and gaming.
11. BRICS bank to issue first yuan-denominated bonds:
  • The New Development Bank of the BRICS countries is set to issue its first yuan-denominated bonds with plans to release more bonds in local currencies including in Indian Rupee.
  • The Shanghai-based bank founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) and headed by eminent Indian banker M V Kamath plans to finance sustainable development projects in the emerging markets and developing countries.
12. China successfully launches three satellites:
  • China has successfully launched three (one domestic and two foreign) satellites namely Ziyuan III 02 satellite and two NewSat satellites.
  • They were launched on the back of a Long March 4B rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in northern Shanxi Province.
  • It was the 228th flight mission by a Long March carrier rocket.
13. Sri Lanka's Nuwan Kulasekara retires from Test Cricket:
  • Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Kulasekara has announced his retirement from Tests to focus on limited-overs cricket.
  • The right-arm pacer has represented Sri Lanka in 21 Test matches and picked up 48 wickets since making his debut in April 2005.
