1. France's Iris Mittenaere wins Miss Universe 2016:
  • Miss France Iris Mittenaere was crowned Miss Universe 2016 at the Mall of Asia Arena on Monday. 
  • Haiti's Raquel Pelissier was placed the first runner-up, while Colombia's Andrea Tovar finished as the second runner-up. 
  • Flo Rida and Boyz II Men gave musical performances during the Miss Universe pageant. 
  • India's Roshmitha Harimurthy could not make it to the final 13 list of the pageant.
2. Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 69th death anniversary:
  • The nation pays homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 69th death anniversary today (30 January 2017). 
  • He was assassinated on this day in 1948. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion. 
  • President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Anasri and other eminent leaders paid tributes to Bapu at his Samadhi, Rajghat in New Delhi. An inter-religious prayer will be organised there on the occasion. 
3. Supreme Court appoints ex-CAG Vinod Rai to head BCCI:
  • The Supreme Court has appointed former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai as head of four-member Committee of Administrators to run Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). 
  • Other three members of the committee are noted historian Ramachandra Guha, Indian women’s team captain Diana Edulji and managing director of IDFC Limited Vikram Limaye.
4. Government launches Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign:
  • The Union Government has launched nationwide “Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign (SLAC)” on the occasion of Anti-Leprosy Day (observed on the last Sunday of January). 
  • The day is observed every year on January 30 in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi who attained martyrdom on this day in 1948, to remember his selfless efforts and care for the people affected with Leprosy.
  • The Need of this Campaign is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and it usually affects the skin and peripheral nerves. The mode of transmission of leprosy is still not known.
5. IndiaPost gets payments bank licence from RBI:
  • IndiaPost under Department of Posts (Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology) received final payments bank licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). 
  • With this, India Post became the third entity after Bharti Airtel and Paytm to receive final payments bank licence to roll-out of banking operations commercially under the permit.
  • The Centre has appointed AP Singh, who was earlier Joint Secretary in the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management, as the interim Managing Director and CEO of IPPB.
6. Inheritance Court for Non-Muslims to be Set up in Abu Dhabi: 
  • The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has issued a resolution to set up a Personal Status and Inheritance Court for non Muslims in Abu Dhabi.
  • The aim of setting up the Court is to ensure access to services for all segment of the society and promote the culture of tolerance and acceptance of other communities values at the judiciary level.
7. Karnataka government to amend law for conducting kambala:
  • The Karnataka government has decided to bring an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA), 1960 for conducting traditional sports of Kambala and bull-cart race in the State. 
  • State Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approved amendments to the Act and announced that bill will be placed before both Houses of the State legislature.
  • The traditional sport along with bull-cart race was banned in the state by the Karnataka high court in November 2016 in an interim order while hearing a case filed by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) citing animal cruelty.
8. Acharya sworn in as Arunachal Pradesh Acting Governor:
  • Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya was sworn in as Acting Governor of Arunachal Pradesh by Gauhati HC Chief Justice Ajit Singh. 
  • Acharya was given the additional charge after V Shanmuganathan resigned on Thursday night. 
  • Shanmuganathan had resigned following charges of inappropriate behaviour against him.
9. Seven new countries join BEPS agreement:
  • Seven new countries Lithuania, Gabon, Hungary, Indonesia, Malta, Mauritius and Russia  have signed Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement for Country-by-Country Reporting (CbC MCAA). 
  • With this, the total number of signatories has increased to 57 including India (signed in May 2015). 
  • CbC MCAA is a tax co-operation agreement to enable automatic sharing of country-by-country information.
10. Ex-HC judge Vishwanath Shetty sworn in as Karnataka Lokayukta:
  • Former HC judge Justice P Vishwanath Shetty was administered the oath of office by governor Vajubhai R Vala. 
  • The post had remained vacant since Y Bhaskar Rao stepped down in December 2015 following bribery scandal. 
11. IMD to Set up Weather Stations in 660 Districts by 2019:
  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has decided to set up weather stations in 660 districts of the country for better and prompt weather forecasting with major focus on rain-fed and non-rain-fed areas to give crop specific advisories.
  • The system would be launched in phased manner. Initially, IMD has planned to set up the system in 130 districts and gradually increase it to 660 by 2019. 
  • The plan will be taken at block level after successful functioning at district level.
12. Hollywood Legend & Harry Porter actor John Hurt dies at 77:
  • Sir John Hurt, the British actor who starred in The Elephant Man and Harry Potter, John Hurt dies at 77died on January 25, 2017 at his residence in Norfolk, London due to Cancer. He was 77.
13. India’s largest startup incubator to be built at Hubballi:
  • Indian-American entrepreneur, philanthropist and venture capitalist Gururaj Deshpande has decided to launch India’s largest startup incubation centre at Hubballi (earlier Hubli) in Karnataka.
  • The decision is based on the idea of expansion of the Deshpande Foundation’s initial incubation center, Sandbox, which was founded by Deshpande and his wife Jaishree in 2008
14. Noida farmer Manveer Gurjar wins 'Bigg Boss 10':
  • Manveer Gurjar, a farmer and dairy owner from Noida, was declared the winner of reality TV show 'Bigg Boss 10' on Sunday. 
  • Gurjar, one of the non-celebrity contestants, was awarded the Bigg Boss trophy along with Rs 40 lakh cash prize.
  • Manveer defeated celebrity contestants Bani Judge and Lopamudra Raut while non-celebrity finalist Manu Punjabi chose to quit the show.
15. India gets its own multi-sports museum in Kolkata:
  • In a first, India's Fanatic Sports Museum opened to the public in Kolkata .
  • The museum will display memorabilia from cricket, hockey, football and the Olympics and Paralympics. Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar were among others to inaugurate the museum.
16. PV Sindhu wins Syed Modi International badminton tournament:
  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu won the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold after beating Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska in the final on Sunday. 
  • The Rio Olympics silver medalist eased past her opponent in straight sets, 21-13, 21-14. 
  • India's Sameer Verma also won the tournament in men's singles category after defeating compatriot Sai Praneeth in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16.
17. Abul Hossain Wins 2017 Kolkata Marathon:
  • Siliguri lad Abul Hossain won the Kolkata Marathon as amateur runners from north Bengal and Northeast India dominated the first edition of the meet here.Hossain won the race with a timing of two hours 34 minutes and two seconds to leave Kolkata lad Biswanath Pal second, five minutes behind.
  • Paritosh Roy finished third with a timing of two hours, 52 minutes 48 seconds.Sikkim's Mangali Tamang won the women's half marathon with a timing of one hour 31 minutes and 13 seconds.
