1. Saina Nehwal wins Malaysian Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament:
  • Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has won the Malaysian Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament.
  • She defeated Thai teenager Pornpawee Chochuwong 22-20, 22-20.
  • India's badminton star has begin the new year with the Malaysian Masters title.
2. Himachal Pradesh beats Kerala in learning outcomes: ASER
  • According to the Annual Status Education Report (ASER) 2016, Himachal Pradesh has the country's highest reading and mathematics learning levels. 
  • According to the report, the state has the highest rate of children who can read a standard II level of text in the country.
3. Special Task Force for women safety reconstituted:
  • A special task force (STF) for women safety has been reconstituted under the Chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal with his approval, the Delhi government’s Home Department said in a communication sent to the Delhi High Court.
  • The L-G will be a chairperson of the special task force and including him there will be 17 members in it. 
  • The task force will conduct a meeting in every 15 days. 
  • The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal is also a member of the STF.
4. MoU between India and Vietnam in the field of cyber security:
  • The Union Cabinet gave its  ex-post facto approval to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Vietnam in the field of cyber security.
  • The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
  • The MoU was signed between Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and the Cyber Security Department of Vietnam on 3 September 2016 at Hanoi in Vietnam.
5. MoU between India and Serbia for cooperation in IT and Electronics:
  • The Union Cabinet gave its ex-post facto approval to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Serbia.
  • The MoU seeks to promote bilateral cooperation in the field of information technology and electronics.
  • The MoU also facilitates exchanges between the private entities, capacity building institutions, the governments and other public and private organizations of the two countries that are involved in information technology and electronics sectors.
6. Russian Railways to help India get train speed to 200 kmph:
  • Russian Railways is helping India's national transporter increase the speed of its passenger trains up to 200 km per hour
  • Russian Railways is at present collaborating with Indian Railways on a 575-km stretch between Nagpur and Secunderabad and submitted a preliminary report last week. 
  • A protocol for this project was signed between the railway ministries of the two countries in October last year. 
7. Bihar forms world’s longest human chain of 11,000 kilometres:
  • Bihar claimed to have formed the world's longest human chain, covering an estimated distance of 11,292 kilometres, involving over two crore citizens against alcoholism and liquor
  • Bihar CM Nitish Kumar joined hands with Lalu Prasad and other political party leaders to start the 45-minute-long chain. 
  • The previous record was the 1,050-km human chain formed in Bangladesh.
8. Over 3.5 lakh people sing national anthem, set new world record:
  • More than 3.5 lakh people in Gujarat’s Rajkot district set a new world record by singing the national anthem at an event
  • The feat took place at the installation of a Khodiyar goddess idol at the newly-built Khodal Dham temple in the town.
  • The previous record stood for 2,54,537 people singing the national anthem in Bangladesh in 2014.
9. Apple named most innovative company of 2016:
  • Technology giant Apple has emerged as the most innovative company for 2016, according to Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG's) annual list which ranks world’s 50 most innovative firms for the 11th straight year. 
  • Google was ranked second, followed by electric carmaker Tesla on the list. Further, ride-hailing service Uber and home rental platform Airbnb were among the firms included in the list for the first time.
10. PNB launches Contactless Credit Card:
  • In another digitalisation initiative, Punjab National Bank (PNB) has launched a Contactless Credit Card. 
  • This new credit card, which has been named PNB Wave N Pay -Contactless Card, was launched by Usha Ananthasubramanian, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, PNB in New Delhi on 21st January 2017.
  • This card could be used by just waving it across the terminal and the transaction will be through. There is no need to enter any PIN for transactions up to Rs. 2,000. 
11. PVR Pictures launched Vkaao theatre-on-demand service:
  • Multiplex chain operator PVR Pictures in January 2017 launched its theatre-on-demand service Vkaao.
  • Vkaao is an online platform that enables consumers to watch any movie of their choice at a theatre of their choice.
  • However, the minimum requirement for a show to be confirmed would be 50 seats.
  • Vkaao is very disruptive and gives control to customers to choose what they want to watch, when and where.
12. St Petersburg unveils logo for UEFA Euro Cup 2020:
  • Russia’s second largest city St Petersburg has launched an official emblem for the 2020 UEFA Euro Cup during a solemn ceremony.
  • The city is the last of the 13 UEFA Euro 2020 host cities to unveil its host city logo.
  • Three group stage matches and a quarter-final will take place at St Petersburg’s stadium.
  • The logo sees each of the 13 host city logos feature a single bridge from St Petersburg.
  • The picturesque Palace Bridge is the key element of St Petersburg's host city logo.
