1. Dharamsala declared second capital of Himachal Pradesh:
  • The Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has announced Dharamsala town (Kangra district) will be second capital of Himachal Pradesh.
  • The Dharamsala town is around 250 km from the state capital Shimla and has a significance and history of its own.
  • Dharamsala was already marked prominently not only in the map of India but of the world due to its significance owing to many reasons, including the Dalai Lama's abode.
2. Donald Trump takes oath as 45th US president:
  • Real-estate czar Donald Trump officially took oath as the 45th President of the US on Friday, succeeding Barack Obama who served two terms.  
  • Mike Pence took oath as Vice President in a grand ceremony in Washington, DC. 
  • The Republican comfortably won the presidency with 304 electoral votes.
3. Bihar Govt launches "Nasha Mukt campaign" to make state addiction-free:
  • Today, the Bihar government has launched  "Nasha Mukt campaign" to make the state addidction-free.
  • Over two crore people have participated in human chains formed across the state on the occasion.
  • The total length of the chain was 11292 kilometers and it covered all panchayats of the state.
  • Besides Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, all teachers and students of schools and colleges have participated the human chain and it covered all panchayats of the state.
  • ‘Nasha Mukti’ in Bihar will herald a new era in the state as no one will be permitted to use intoxicating substance and tobacco products.
4. IORA finalises MoU for cooperation in SME sector:
  • Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member-states have finalised Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) for cooperation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) sector.
  • The MoUs were finalised during the Workshop on MSME Cooperation amongst IORA member countries held in New Delhi. 
  • They will take effect for each party upon signature by 5 countries.
5. ISKCON’s Govardhan eco village bags UN award:
  • ISKCON’s Govardhan eco village in Thane district has been conferred with the UNWTO Award for Innovation in the category of Non-Governmental Organisations(NGO) at the annual United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism at Madrid in Spain. 
  • Govardhan eco village become the first village in India has recognized by UN in the NGO sector.
  • The village received this honour for its initiative of eco tourism as a catalyst for rural development.
6. India's biggest aircraft carrier ship INS Vikramaditya first to have ATM onboard:
  • Indian Navy’s largest warship INS Vikramditya has become the first warship to be equipped with its own dedicated ATM (Automated Teller Machine).
  • The ATM will be provided by India’s largest public sector bank State Bank of India (SBI).
  • The services will be on the satellite link and will cater to over two thousand naval personnel deployed on the aircraft carrier.
  • INS Vikramaditya is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier purchased from Russia.
7. India Innovation Index to measure performance of Indian states:
  • The World Economic Forum (WEF), NITI Aayog, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Cornell University will work to develop an India Innovation Index to provide impetus to states to drive innovative spirit. 
  • Based on the WEF’s GII (Global Innovation Index), the India Innovation Index will be tailored to better reflect of India’s ground reality and include metrics well suited to the Indian context for innovation. 
  • The India Innovation Index will measure and rank the innovation performance of all states in India with the aim of moving India towards an innovation-driven economy.
8. Union Government clears Tamil Nadu’s Ordinance on Jallikattu:
  • The Union Government has Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to promulgate an ordinance to hold Jallikattu, a traditional bull taming sport. 
  • The Union Ministries of Home, Law and Environment has vetted the state’s draft ordinance and cleared the amendment. Now, Tamil Nadu Governor can promulgate ordinance as per Article 213 of the constitution. 
  • It was mandatory for Tamil Nadu government to get a nod from the Centre as subject in this regard was falling in the Concurrent list of the Constitution. 
  • The ordinance will denotify the bull from the list of performing animals. 
  • This will ensure that provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA), 1960 will not apply to the bull.
9. PM Modi addresses Combined Commanders Conference at Dehradun:
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the Combined Commanders Conference (CCC) at Dehradun in Uttarakhand . 
  • The conference was hosted at the Indian Military Academy, and attended by all Army commanders and their equivalents from the Air Force and the Navy. 
  • This will be the first CCC for the three military chiefs since taking over as head of their services last year (2016).
10. Cooperative banks can't accept deposits under PMGKY: Govt
  • Today, the union government has clarified that Co-operative Banks are not authorized to accept deposits under the “Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Deposit Scheme” (PMGKDS).
  • The scheme was launched on 17th of Dec and will remain open for declarations up to 31st March this year.
11. 9.2 lakh Cr. rupees remonetised till date: RBI
  • The RBI Governor Urjit Patel appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance and briefed the panel about government's recent decision to demonetize high-value currency.
  • The committee headed by Congress leader Veerappa Moily.
  • 9.2 lakh crore rupees in new currency has been introduced in the system after the decision.
12. Over 3.81 lakh Winners of Rs 61 cr in NITI Aayog’s Lucky Draw Scheme:
  • According to a statement by NITI Aayog, till date over 3.81 lakh consumers and 21,000 merchants have been declared as the winner of the NITI Aayog’s lucky draw schemes namely Lucky Grahak Yojana (LGY) for consumers and Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana (DVY) for merchants.
  • It also stated that daily as well as weekly prize money worth Rs 60.90 crore has been declared at 24 Digi-Dhan Melas organized across the country. Besides, most of the winners were in the age group of 21-30 years.
  • The top 5 states that had most of the winners are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.
13. WEF, UCSB partner to protect world's $2.5 trn ocean economy:
  • The World Economic Forum and the UCSB's Marine Science Institute have announced a partnership to improve health of world's oceans and maritime resources. 
  • The new partnership aims to protect world's USD 2.5 trillion ocean economy.
  • This partnership will harness the potential of public-private cooperation and the fourth industrial revolution to help the international community meet the ocean sustainable development goal
14. RBI imposes Rs 75 lakh penalty on Bombay Mercantile Cooperative Bank:
  • India’s central banking institution, Reserve Bank of India(RBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 75 lakhs on Bombay Mercantile Co-operative Bank for violations of norms related to KYC and anti-money laundering.
  • RBI had issued a notice regarding this to the bank and the bank has submitted its written reply.The Mercantile Bank of Bombay was an Anglo-Indian bank with business focus in the Far East.
  • The Mercantile Bank of Bombay was renamed to Mercantile Bank of India, London, and China  in 1857.Founded in 1853 Headquarters in London.
15. First flight under UDAN scheme to take off in February 2017:
  • The first flight is likely to take off next month under the government's ambitious regional connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh Ke Aam Naagrik).
  • The scheme seeks to boost regional air connectivity and provides various incentives to airlines.
  • Under the scheme, the fare for a one hour journey of approximately 500 km on a fixed wing aircraft or for the 30-minute journey on a helicopter will be capped at Rs. 2500.
