1. Bengaluru ranked world’s most dynamic city: JLL Index
  • Bengaluru (capital of Karnatak) has emerged as the most dynamic city in the world. 
  • The index tracks the speed of change of a city’s economy and commercial real estate market. 
  • It covers 134 major established and emerging business hubs and ranks them on parameters like technology, connectivity, population, education and real estate investments.  
  • Top 5 cities in 2017 CMI are Bengaluru (India), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Silicon Valley (US), Shanghai (China), Hyderabad (India).
  • There are six Indian cities Bangaluru-1, Hyderabad-5th, Pune-13th, Chennai-17th, Delhi-23rd and Mumbai-25th in the list of 30.
2. Jaipur Literature Festival begins today:
  • Today, the five-day Literature Festival has been inaugurated by the Chief minister 'Vasundhara Raje' with poet Gulzar in the pink city, Jaipur (Rajasthan)
  • Celebrated writers, thinkers, journalists, historians, poets, novelists and musicians are participating in the event.
  • A special session on Freedom to Dream will also be held where writers will discuss their dreams and dreams of India.
3. Government launches 'ShaGun' portal to monitor Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan:
  • The Union Government launched a dedicated web portal ShaGun (http://ssashagun.nic.in) for monitoring the progress of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). 
  • The portal was developed by World Bank in collaboration with Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. 
  • Its name has been derived from the words Shala (means schools) and Gun (i.e. Gunvatta meaning Quality). 
  • ShaGun portal was developed with a twin track approach to monitor schools under the SSA and also the quality of education imparted by them.
4. Digi Dhan Melas: Consumers, merchants win prizes worth Rs 61 Cr:
  • Over three lakh 80 thousand consumers and twenty-one thousand merchants have won prize money worth around 61 crore rupees at 24 Digi-Dhan Melas across the country.
  • This was disclosed by the Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in New Delhi Government’s efforts to give a boost to the digital payment systems and cashless economy have evoked good response from the people. 
  • People from different age groups, occupations and walks of life have taken part in a big way in the Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana giving a fillip to digital transactions. 
5. Second Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi:
  • The second edition of Ministry of External Affairs’ annual Raisina Dialogue was held in New Delhi with the theme 'The New Normal: Multilateralism in a multipolar world'
  • The flagship geo-political conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was attended by delegates from 65 countries.
6. Railway Ministry unveils Mission 41K to save energy:
  • Union Railway Ministry has unveiled ‘Mission 41K’ to save Rs. 41,000 crore on the Indian Railways’ expenditure on energy consumption over the next 10 years. 
  • The launch of this programme was announced at a Roundtable Discussion on Energy Initiatives of Indian Railways with external stakeholders headed by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
7. Anandam Scheme Launched in Madhya Pradesh to Help Poor:
  • Madhya Pradesh government lead by Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched Aanandam programme of the newly-formed Aanand Department.
  • Aanandam scheme will help the poor people to get the daily needs like like jackets, sarees, blankets, utensils, school bags from the wealthy people.
  • For this particular place is alloacted in each district to collect these items.
  • The people who wishes to help others can visit website www.anandsansthanmp.in to become Anandak under Anandam SchemNonGovernmentent organisations, Government employees, cultural and business organisations can participate in this programe.
8. Haryana govt. approves installation of solar energy devices in Anganwadi centers:
  • The Haryana government has approved the installation of solar energy devices at a cost of Rs 44 crore in all 25,962 Anganwadi centers in the State.
  • LED lights and fans in these centers would be run with solar power.
  • This scheme would reduce electricity bills of 'Anganwadi centers' by Rs. 12 crore annually.
9. P Mukherjee to inaugurate 28th Dantan Gramin Mela in West Bengal:
  • President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated the 28th Dantan Gramin Mela in West Midnapore district in West Bengal
  • He is on a 4-day visit to West Bengal. The fair will display the rural handicraft skills of the people of the region.
  • The different goods ranging from textile to terracotta will be on display.
10. Meghalaya’s Mawlynnong village becomes a role model for cleanliness:
  • Mawlynnong village in Meghalaya has become a role model for other states in maintaining cleanliness known as Asia’s cleanest village.
  • Mawlynnong has become tourists’ hotspot.
  • The Secretary of the village committee stated that, all 90 families of the village constructed toilets in 1989. 
  • Under Swachh Bharat Mission, three public toilets have been constructed in the village. 
11. India becomes associate member of CERN:
  • India formally became an associate member of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) with the government completing the internal approval procedures for the agreement it signed in November 2016. 
  • Prior to it, in September 2016, CERN Council had adopted a resolution upgrading India’s position as associate member from earlier ‘observer’ status (since 2004).
  • CERN as an organisation is world’s largest nuclear and particle physics laboratory. It is situated in North West suburbs of Geneva on France-Swiss Border & established in 1954.
12. Scientists names 3 diseases that could cause next global health emergency:
  • Scientists have named three relatively little-known diseases they think could cause the next global health emergency. 
  • A coalition of governments and charities has committed 460 million dollars to speed up vaccine development for Mers, Lassa fever and Nipah virus
  • They are asking funders at the World Economic Forum Davos for another 500 million dollars. 
13. Silicon identified as ‘missing element’ in Earth’s core:
  • Scientists from Tohoku University in Japan have claimed that Silicon (Si) is the ‘missing element’ in the Earth’s core
  • This discovery could help us to better understand how our world formed. According to them silicon likely makes up a significant proportion of Earth’s core after its major constituents iron and nickel. 
  • It was missing element in the deep interiors of our planet that has eluded us for decades.
14. Only cash, deposits can be declared under PMGKY: 
  • Undisclosed income in assets such as jewellery, stock or immovable property or in foreign bank accounts will not be accepted under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY).
  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes on stated that only undisclosed income in domestic bank accounts, post offices or stashed elsewhere will be accepted under the scheme.
  • Only income represented in the form of cash or deposit in an account maintained with specified entity can be declared.
15. Bharti AXA General appoints Sanjeev Srinivasan as MD & CEO:
  • Bharti AXA General (Joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and AXA) has appointed Sanjeev Srinivasan as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD).
  • Earlier, Srinivasan joined Bharti AXA General Insurance in August 2016 as Chief Commercial and Principal Officer.
16. PNB, India Post Bank team up:
  • Punjab National Bank and India Post Payments Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding.
  • PNB will provide technology platform for pilot launch of IPPB on receipt of regulatory nod from the Reserve Bank of India.
  • IPPB has been incorporated under the Department of Posts with 100 per cent government equity.
17. 30 More Countries to Join Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank:
  • The Foreign Ministry spokesperson of China, Hua Chunying stated that thirty more countries have applied for joining the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) besides 57 founding members.
  • It was officially established with 57 founding members and authorized capital of USD 100 billion.China is the largest shareholder of the bank having 26.6% voting shares. India is  the second largest shareholder with 7.5% followed by Russia 5.93% and Germany with 4.5%.
18. Priyanka Chopra wins People's Choice Awards for Favourite Dramatic TV Actress:
  • Indian actress Priyanka Chopra ( 34-year) has won the Favourite Dramatic TV Actress at the 43rd People’s Choice Award.
  • She won the honor for her role in the American drama TV series Quantico.
  • This is the second People’s Choice Award for Chopra.
  • Earlier, She had won her first award in 2016 in the ‘Favourite Actress in a New TV series’ category for her role in Quantico.
19. Former Chhattisgarh minister Tarun Prasad Chatterjee passes away:
  • Senior Congress leader and former state minister of Chhattisgarh, Tarun Prasad Chatterjee (68-years) has passed away  Raipur(Chhattisgarh).
  • He was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time from Raipur (rural) constituency in 1980, 1990, 1993 and 1998.
  • He was the Public Works Department (PWD) minister between 2002 and 2003 in Chhatisgarh government.
20. Renowned Actress Gita Sen Passes Away:
  • Veteran actress Gita Sen who was the wife of renowned filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away on January 16, 2017 in Kolkata of cerebral hemorrhage.
