1. O Panneerselvam sworn in as new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu:
  • AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam (65) was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following death of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
  • Mr Panneerselvam, 65, was elected by the ruling AIADMK's lawmakers to lead them at a midnight meeting at the party's office, his status as staunch Jayalalithaa loyalist making him the most acceptable candidate to carry on her work.
  • This is for third time he has sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. 
2. AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa (68-year) passed away:
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away at the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai following cardiac arrest
  • Tamil Nadu government has announced a seven-day State Mourning from today.
  • The national flag on all government buildings will be flown at half-mast. No official entertainment will also be held during this period, The government has also declared a three-day holiday for all educational institutions in the state.
  • She was famously known as Puratchi Thalaivi Amma (revolutionary leader) or Amma.
3. India to train Vietnam’s Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots:
  • India has agreed to train Vietnam’s Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots, boosting growing defence ties between both countries. 
  • In this regard agreement was signed during bilateral discussions between Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Vietnamese counterpart, General Ngo Xuan Lich in New Delhi.
4. Free textbooks for IX & X Students in Assam:
  • Students of classes IX and X of  Assam will get free textbooks from academic year 2017-18 as the State government aims to increase enrolment in the state-funded schools and reduce dropout rate.
  • Free textbooks will reach to the students by 25 of this month as the classes of new sessions in Assam starts from New Year Day.
  • The scheme will cover all government high and higher secondary schools and non provincilasied schools who got financial incentives, among others.
5. Joint maritime exercise ‘Konkan 16’ between India and UK begins:
  • The annual bilateral maritime exercise Konkan 16 between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy (British Navy) started in Mumbai, Maharashtra. 
  • The 2016 edition of the exercise (from 05 to 16 December 2016) will play an important chapter in the maritime interactions. 
  • It will familiarise navies of both countries with each other’s planning processes and further enhance synergy and inter-operability.  
  • Konkan 16 will be conducted in two phases in Mumbai and Goa. The first phase (05 to 09 December 2016) has begun in Mumbai.
6. West Bengal CM forms Anti-child Trafficking panel:
  • The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee announced on 6 December that the state would be setting up a special panel to stop child trafficking. 
  • Chaired by Parliamentary Affairs minister Partha Chatterjee, the committees would constitute a Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP and officers and members of the opposition parties, Congress and CPI (M).
7. Prez Mukherjee to inaugurate 1st ever International Gita Mahotsav:
  • President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated the first ever International Gita Mahotsav in Kurukshetra, Haryana today.
  • President laid the foundation stone of Krishna circuit on the occasion.
  • It is a five day mega event.
  • Aim of Gita mahotsav is to spread eternal message of Gita to the world community, global chanting of Srimadbhagvad Gita would also be held on Gita Jayanti Day before the final deepdaan ceremony at Brahmsarovar in Kurukshetra.
8. India crosses $300 billion milestone:
  • India has received over US $300 billion US Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) milestone between April 2000 and September 2016. 
  • The cumulative FDI inflows during the period amounted to US $310.26 billion. 
  • 33% of the FDI came through the Mauritius route. India received US $101.76 billion dollar from Mauritius between April 2000 and September 2016.
9. MMTC to tie-up with SBI to sell govt minted 'Indian Gold Coin':
  • India’s largest public sector trading body MMTC(Metals and Minerals Trading goldCorporation) has tied-up with the State Bank of India (SBI) to sell government-minted Indian Gold Coin(24 Karat).
  • The Gold Coin will be available in denominations of 5gm, 10gm and 20 gm bar.
10. Shavkat Mirziyoyev wins Uzbekistan Presidential Election:
  • The Prime Minister and acting President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected the country's president in the presidential election, which was held on 4 December 2016.
  • As per the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, Mirziyoyev won the election with an overwhelming vote. 
  • He garnered 88.61% of the votes, which is above the required over 50% of valid ballots to become a president.
11. Bernard Cazeneuve named French PM after Manuel Valls quits:
  • The French president, François Hollande, has named Bernard Cazeneuve to head the French government as prime minister until a presidential election next May.
  • Cazeneuve, who was interior minister, replaced Manuel Valls, who resigned on Tuesday morning after announcing his bid to become France's next president.
12. Nation pays homage to Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar on his 60th death anniversary:
  • Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution, was in news on 6 December 2016. He came into news on his 60th death anniversary.
  • On the occasion, lakhs of people converged at Chaitya Bhoomi to pay homage to him. 
  • Chaitya Bhoomi is the place where Ambedkar was cremated after his death on 6 December 1956.
13. B S Bhullar appointed Chief of Directorate General of Civil Aviation:
  • Senior bureaucrat B S Bhullar 1986-batch IAS officer was appointed chief of aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
  • He is presently working as Additional Secretary in Civil Aviation Ministry.
  • The post has been lying vacant for past over four months after M Sathiyavathy, first woman chief of the aviation regulator, was named as new Union Labour Secretary in July this year.
13. Praful Patel appointed as AFC senior VP:
  • All India Football Federation President Praful Patel has been appointed as a senior vice president of Asian Football Confederation.
  • Patel, who was serving as the vice president of the South East Region for the Asian Football Confederation.
