1. Bezwada Wilson and TM Krishna win Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2016:
  • Bezwada Wilson and  TM Krishna have been conferred the Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2016.
  • Human rights activist Bezwada Wilson was born in Karnataka  has been lauded for his efforts towards asserting the inalienable right to a life of human dignity.
  • South Indian classical musician TM Krishna has been awarded for ensuring social inclusiveness in culture.
  • The four other awardees for 2016 are Conchita Carpio-Morales (Philippines), Dompet Dhuafa (Indonesia), Vientiane Rescue(Laos) and the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (Japan).
  • The Ramon Magsaysay Award is the Asia’s highest honor, it celebrates greatness of spirit and trans formative leadership in Asia.
  • The prize was established in April 1957  in the memory of Philippines’ 3rd President Ramon Magsaysay who had died in air disaster in March 1957.
2. Manipur becomes fourteenth State to join ‘UDAY’:
  • Manipur has joined the Ujwal DISCOM (distribution company) Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme meant for revival of debt-stressed power distribution utilities and will get benefits of around Rs 263 crore.
  • Manipur is the 14th state to join the UDAY. It is also the first North Eastern state to opt for the UDAY for improving the efficiency of the DISCOM.
3. Odisha announces Rs.60 lakh special incentive for Rio Olympic qualifiers:
  • Chief Minister of Odisa Naveen Patnaik has announced Rs. 60 lakh cash for six sports persons of the state who have qualified for the Rio Olympics 2016.
  • This incentive would be of immense help for them to prepare for the mega event.
  • The six sports persons  are Dutee Chand (sprinter-100 m) and Srabani Nanda (sprinters-200m) and four hockey players Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz and Sunita Lakra.
4. Govt approves Rs 1,601 crore for Himayat programme in J&K:
  • The Union Government has approved 1,600 crore rupees for Jammu and Kashmir under skill development initiative “Himayat” programme.
  • In this Himayat programme, youths from rural and urban areas of J&K would be imparted with training in various job-intensive vocational courses over the next three years.
  • Enrolled youths will be given training for six-months, nine-months and one year job-oriented courses. A provision has been also kept for foreign placements as well.
5. Abdul Kalam’s statue unveiled in Rameswaram:
  • Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Manohar Parrikar unveiled a life-size statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at Peikarumbu, his burial site in Rameswaram to mark his first death anniversary.
  • Kalam passed away on July 27 last year after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM- Shillong in Meghalaya.
  • Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen "A. P. J." Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.
6. SBI use IOC kisan seva centres to serve farmers:
  • State bank of india (SBI) has used Indian Oil Corporation’s ‘Kisan Seva Kendras’ to extend banking facilities to farmers across the country.
  • Indian Oil Corporation has set up 6,500 Kisan Seva Kendrass in rural and remote areas to provide access to the agricultural inputs like diesel, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides to farmers.
  • The tie-up will help farmers avail the facilities of various products and services by SBI customer service points.
7. India's CSIR ranked world's 12th best government institute:
  • The Council of Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR) has been ranked world's 12th best government institution.
  • The institutes were ranked by a prestigious Scimago Institutions Rankings that ranks institutes based on the research performance, innovation and social impact.
  • France's National Centre for Scientific Research was ranked first followed by Chinese Academy of Science, China.
8. Sharad Pawar to step down voluntarily as Mumbai chief:
  • Mumbai Cricket Association president Sharad Pawar (75-year) will step down as Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president within six months.
  • Earlier,RM Lodha Committee had recommended that there be caps of 70 years on age and duration of tenure of 9 years of elected office bearers and state associations.
  • Lodha Committee proposals were signed off on by the Supreme Court on July 18.
  • Pawar does not qualify on both grounds, over 70 years of age and having served as an office bearer for over nine years.
  • Sharad Govindrao Pawar is an Indian politician who serves as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party which he founded in 1999, after separating from the Indian National Congress.
9. BCCI chief Anurag Thakur to join Territorial Army:
  • BJP MP and Anurag Thakur will be commissioned into the Territorial Army (TA) as a regular officer on 29th July 2016.
  • Thakur made it to the TA after clearing an exam and a personal interview conducted in Chandigarh.
  • He will be the first serving BJP MP to join the military force.
10. Lok Sabha passes Child Labour Amendment Bill:
  • The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill  has been passed by Lok Sabha.
  • Earlier, the bill was first passed in Rajya Sabha and later in Lok Sabha during this monsoon session of Parliament.
  • This bill prohibits employment of children below 14 years in all occupations except in family business, with the provision for the imprisonment of up to two years for any violation.
  • The Bill also adds a new category of persons called “adolescent” means a person between 14 and 18 years of age.
  • The penalty for employing a child has been hiked up to imprisonment between 6 months and two years or a fine of Rs 20 thousand to Rs 50 thousand or both.
11. Haryana To Open Yoga Centres At Municipal Level:
  • Yoga centres will be opened in all municipal committees, councils and corporations in Haryana.
  • The announcement was made by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anil Vij.
  • One yoga centre would be opened in each municipal committee, two within jurisdiction of each municipal council and four in each municipal corporation.
12. Odisha approves 3 investment projects worth Rs 874 cr:
  • The Odisha government has approved three projects involving investment of nearly 870 crore rupees. The projects will generate employment potential of 630 persons.
  • The projects are expansion of Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited in Khurda; 2.50 lakh hectolitre capacity brewery plant in Dhenkanal district and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited Common User Facility Centre in Jharsuguda district.
13. WHO declares Brazil free of measles:
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Brazil free of measles due to no case of the disease was registered in the last year.
  • Brazil saw no domestic cases of measles from 1985 to 2000, it broke out in 2013 in the northeastern states of Pernambuco and Ceara.
  • Measles can be transmitted orally, through mucus and mainly affects children.
  • Measles can be spread rapidly through the air due to sneezing or a cough.
  • The first symptoms appear after 10 days with red spots on the skin.
14. Centre Approves Rs. 1601 Crore For Skill Development Programme:
  • The Union Government has approved nearly 1600 crore rupees for Jammu and Kashmir under skill development initiative 'Himayat'.
  • Under it, youths from both rural and urban areas of J&K would be imparted with training in various job-intensive vocational courses over the next three years.
  • Himayat will be implemented in partnership with private agencies or NGOs who are into placement linked skill training for youth and aims to train 100000 youth in 5 years and provide at least 75% of them with jobs.
15. Former diplomat Arundhati Ghose passes away :
  • Eminent diplomat Arundhati Ghose (76-year) has passed away at her residence in Delhi.
  • Ghose led the Indian delegation at the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) negotiations in Geneva in 1996.
  • She had joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1963 and served in various capacities at the Indian embassies in Austria, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
  • She was born on November 25, 1939. She graduated from Lady Brabourne College in Kolkata.
16. Muttaiah Muralitharan to enter ICC Hall of Fame:
  • Spin legend Muttaiah Muralitharan will be the first Sri Lankan to be included in the ICC's Hall of Fame.
  • Australia's Arthur Morris, Karen Rolton and George Lohmann of England are the three along with Muralitharan to share the honours.
