1. Pema Khandu sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh:
  • Pema Khandu (36) of Congress Party was sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. 
  • With this,he became the youngest Chief Minister in the country
  • He was administered the oath to office and secrecy by Governor Tathagata Roy at the Rajbhavan in Itanagar. Besides, Chowna Mein was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister. 
  • Pema Khandu was selected as CM of Arunachal Pradesh after he had staked claim to power on the basis of the support of 45 party MLAs along with 2 independents in the 60-member House with an effective strength of 58.  
  • He is also supported by the ousted Chief Minister Khaliko Pul, who has returned to the Congress party with 30 dissident Congress MLAs.
2. "Courage & Commitment" authored by Margaret Alva:
  • A book titled Courage & Commitment: An Autobiography by Margaret Alva was in news in the second week of July 2016.
  • Via this book, Alva narrates her forty-year career under four Prime Ministers, namely Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. It also tells about her transition from politician to Governor.
  • In the book, the Alva narrates her trials and triumphs and controversies that rocked her career as a politician leading to expulsion from Congress Party in 1979. She provides details of her spats with Sanjay Gandhi, her role in framing Rajiv Gandhi’s last campaign tour and her involvement with the Jain Hawala investigation when in charge of the CBI.
  • Margaret Alva is a political leader from the Indian National Congress.
  • She was the governor Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
3. UNESCO announces 9 new World Heritage Sites:
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN cultural agency added nine new sites on its World Heritage List. 
  • Decision in this regard was taken at the 40th session of The World Heritage Committee meeting in Istanbul, Turkey. With these inclusions, the recorded sites on the World Heritage now stand at 981 which include both cultural and natural wonders. 
9 new World Heritage Sites are:
1. Old city of Ani (Turkey)
2. Zuojiang Huashan rock art cultural landscape (China)
3. Qanat (Iran)
4. Nalanda Mahavihara (India)
5. Artificial islets of Nan Madol (Micronesia)
6. Stecci Sites (Bosnia)
7. Ancient Philippi (Spain)
8. Antequera Dolmens (Spain)
9. Gorham’s Cave Complex (Britain)

4. Union Commerce Ministry launches e-marketplace portal for goods procurement:
  • The Union Commerce Ministry has launched an e-marketplace portal for online purchase of goods and services by various central government ministries and departments. 
  • It was launched by the Union Minister of State (MoS) Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi.
  • The e-marketplace portal has been developed by the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D). 
  • The e-marketplace portal aims at bringing in more transparency and streamlining the government procurement of goods and services. Using this, portal all the government departments and ministries can procure goods and services. 
  • It will help to aggregate demand which will lead to lower prices, better choices and faster procurement.
5. Maharastra CM launches virtual, digital classrooms across 32 ITIs in state:
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched the facility of virtual and digital classrooms across 32 ITIs in the state on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day (15th July).
  • According to him, the facility of virtual classrooms will bridge the urban-rural divide and open the doors of knowledge. Mr. Fadnavis asked students to master their passion, and assures that jobs will come in plenty due to the power of skill development.
  • Announcing an initiative called 'Skill Sakhis' for women empowerment, Mr. Fadnavis informed that girls comprise half of 40,000 students being also trained for skill development.
6. Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corporation acquires Yatra Online for $218 mn:
  • Yatra Online, Inc. and Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corporation entered into a definitive merger agreement. The transaction values Yatra at an enterprise value of 218 million dollars (1458 crore rupees).
  • Yatra in its statement said that it intends to be listed on the NASDAQ Stock Market under the symbol "YTRA" following completion of the transaction.
  • The combined company will continue to be led by Yatra's experienced management team under the leadership of chief executive and co-founder Dhruv Shringi.
  • Yatra Founded in 2006, Yatra is one of the fastest growing consumer travel platforms and online travel agents in India with more than 4 million customers.
7. ‘Ramayana month’ begins in Kerala:
  • Kerala on 16 July 2016 started observing Ramayana month in the temples. In Malayalam it is termed as the Ramayana Masam
  • The Ramayana Month starts with the commencement of Malayalam month ‘Karkidakam’.
  • During this month the temples and homes of the state recites Adhyatma Ramayanam Kilippattu written by medieval devotional poet Thunjath Ezhuthachan for the 30 days. Ezhuthachan is regarded as the father of Malayalam literature.
8. Government removes SPMCIL CMD, MS Rana:
  • The government has removed MS Rana as CMD of state-owned SPMCIL, which produces bank notes, coins, postage stamps, non-judicial stamps and other official documents.
  • The decision has come after the Delhi High Court asked the government to take action against Rana on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
9. Indian Naval Ships visit Port Kelang, Malaysia:
  • Indian Naval Ships Sahyadri, Shakti and Kirch have arrived at Port Kelang on a four day visit, as part of deployment of the Eastern Fleet to the South China Sea and Western Pacific. 
  • The INS Sahyadri is commanded by Captain K S Rajkumar, INS Shakti is commanded by Captain Gagan Kaushal and INS Kirch is commanded by Commander Sharad Sinsunwal.
  • There, Indian Naval Ships will have professional interaction with the Royal Malaysian Navy for further enhancing co-operation between the two forces. In addition, sporting and cultural interactions and sharing of best practices, aimed at strengthening ties and mutual understanding between the two Navies, are also planned.
  • The visiting ships are also likely to conduct exercises with the Royal Malaysian Navy, aimed at enhancing interoperability in communication as well as Search and Rescue procedures, post departure from Port Kelang.
