1. Sunil Mittal elected Chairman of International Chamber of Commerce:
  • The founder chairman of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Mittal was elected as the chairman of the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The voting for the election of chairman was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • With this, he became the 51st chairman of the ICC and the third Indian business leader to be elected as the chief of the ICC in its near 100-year history.
  • Mittal succeed Terry McGraw, Chairman Emeritus of S&P Global, who becomes ICC's Honorary Chairman.
  • ICC also announced that John Denton, Partner and CEO of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, has been elected succeed Mittal as the organisation's First Vice-Chair.
  • The International Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business organisation with over 6.5 million members in over 130 countries.
2. Peter Thomson elected as President of 71st session of United Nations General Assembly:
  • The United Nations General Assembly elected Peter Thomson, Permanent Representative of Fiji, as President of its upcoming 71st session.
  • Mr. Thomson, who will replace current General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft, will begin his tenure in September at the commencement of the 71st General Assembly session.
  • The Fiji representative will replace current General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft. Thomson will begin his tenure in September 2016 at the commencement of the 71st General Assembly session.
3. RAPID, five-point charter for tax administrators, outlined by Narendra Modi:
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested a mantra, RAPID, to tax officials while inaugurating Rajasva Gyan Sangam, a two-day Annual Conference of Senior Tax Administrators in New Delhi.
  • The mantra, RAPID means R for Revenue, A for Accountability, P for Probity, I for Information and D for Digitization.
  • It will help people to respect the rule of law as well as fear of the long arm of the law for those who evade taxes.
4. Suresh Chandra appointed as Union Law Secretary:
  • Senior legal service officer Suresh Chandra was appointed as Union Law Secretary.
  • Chandra is currently Additional Secretary in the department. G Narayana Raju, Legislative Secretary, was holding additional charge of the post of Secretary, Legal Affairs.
  • This is the first time, government had issued advertisements for the post, even seeking candidates from outside the Law Ministry. Initially, the ministry received 45 applications from across the country, including those from serving sessions judges.
5. Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir nominated as US Ambassador to Malaysia:
  • Indian-origin diplomat Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir was nominated as the next American Ambassador to Malaysia by US President Barack Obama.
  •  He will replace Joseph Y Yun, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service.
6. Piyush Goyal launches Vidyut Pravah and Urja Mobile App in Goa to enhance consumer connectivity:
  • Union Minister of State for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal has launched 'URJA'- Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan Mobile app on the side-lines of ongoing two day Conference of Power Ministers at Cansaulim in South Goa.
  • The two day conference is expected to deliberate on Coal related issues, Hydropower policy, transmission related issues behind other issues.
  • The app is developed by Power Finance Corporation on behalf of Ministry of Power for Urban Power Distribution Sector.
7. China to operationalise the exascale supercomputer Tianhe -3 by 2020:
  • China is all set to operationalise the 'exascale supercomputer' by 2020 which will be capable of performing at least a billion billion calculations per second.
  • The supercomputer will be named Tianhe -3 and it will be operationalised three years before the US plan to install such computers.
  • The development of the 'exascale supercomputer' is part of the China’s national plan for the next generation of high performance computers. It will be developed during the 13th Five-Year-Plan period (2016-2020).
  • The government of Tianjin Binhai New Area, NUDT and the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin are working on the project.
8. Andhra Pradesh to start Internet-based phone service:
  • Andhra Pradesh is perhaps the first State to have obtained a telecom licence and it can issue phone numbers starting with the ‘797’ series from August this year.
  • It indirectly got the opportunity to start an internet based telephone service ‘without requiring any further registration’ after it obtained permission from the Telecom Ministry for starting its own IPTV  Internet Protocol based Television network  as part of its Fibre Grid project. Although it primarily aims at providing affordable net connectivity in every corner of the Stat.
9. World Day to Combat Desertification:
  • World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) 2016 was observed across the world on 17 June 2016. 
  • Inclusive cooperation for achieving Land Degradation Neutrality was the theme for the 2016 WDCD.
  • The slogan for the day was Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People.
10. Government approves Rs 2,070-crore highway project in Punjab:
  • The Union Cabinet has  approved a Rs 2,070-crore highways project in Punjab under its hybrid annuity mode to ensure faster movement of traffic between Chandigarh and Ludhiana.
  • The project is part of Chandigarh-Ludhiana section. Six/ four laning of Kharar to Ludhiana section of NH 95 (New NH 5) has been approved by the Cabinet .
  • The 76-km highway stretch will be constructed at a cost of Rs 2,069.70 crore and land required for it is 383.22 hectare, majority of which has been acquired and remaining 145 hectares will be acquired .
