1. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali passes away:
  • American boxing icon Muhammad Ali (74-years) passed away after 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease in Phoenix, Arizona.
  • He was former three times world heavyweight boxing champion (1964, 1974 and 1978).
  • He also wrote several best-selling books about his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and The Soul of a Butterfly.
  • Ali, originally known as Cassius Clay, began training at 12 years old.
2. Asia's first Gyps Vulture Reintroduction Programme launched:
  • The Haryana Government launched Asia's First Gyps Vulture Reintroduction Programme at Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre, Pinjore.
  • The breeding and conservation of vultures is a significant step in the direction of saving the endangered species.
3. Odisha becomes first state to give social welfare benefits to transgender community:
  • Odisha is first in the country to give transgender people social welfare benefits - such as a pension, housing and food grains.
  • This move seeks to give the transgender community in the state same benefits as those living below the poverty line (BPL) in order to improve their overall social and economic status.
  • They would also be entitled 5 kg of food grains every month under National Food Security Act.
4. Pace-Hingis win French Open Mixed double title 2016:
  • Veteran Indian tennis star Leander Paes (42-year) completed a ‘Career Slam’ in mixed doubles with Swiss partner Martina Hingis (35-years)with a hard-fought win over compatriot Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig.
  • Paes had won Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles in 2015 with Hingis.
  • Hingis had won Grand Slam title number 22nd and fifth trophy in the mixed doubles.
  • The winners split 116000 Euros as prize money while Sania and Dodig got 58000 Euros as a team.
5. PM Modi, Ghani inaugurates Afghan-India Friendship Dam:
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghanistan President Dr Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated the Afghan-India Friendship Dam with in Herat province in Western Afghanistan.
  • The Dam was earlier known as Salma Dam on the river Chist-e-Sharif in western Herat neighbouring Iran.
  • The Landmark Infrastructure Project is funded by Union Government.
6. World’s smallest pacemaker implanted in 92-year old at Gurgaon Hospital:
  • The Micra Transcatheter Pacing System, the smallest pacemaker (two gram capsule sized) in the world has been successfully implanted in a 92-year old man at Medanta, The Medicity Hospital.
  • The pacemaker, which is comparable in size to a vitamin capsule, was inserted in the patient’s body through a catheter in a 30-minute procedure, which was painless and left no visible signs of a medical device under the skin.
  • A pacemaker is a small device that’s placed in the chest or abdomen to help control abnormal heart rhythms.
  • This device uses low-energy electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate.
  • Pacemakers are used to treat arrhythmias.
  • Arrhythmias are problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat.
7. V.O.Chidambaranar Port Bags National Award For Excellence In Cost Management:
  • V.O. Chidambaranar Port has bagged National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2015 from The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) under the category of Public Service Sector- Small.
  • This is the third time this port is receiving the award , the earlier years being 2008 and 2012.
  • The award has been given for exemplary performance of V.O. Chidambaranar Port towards optimization of manpower, savings in electricity, implementation of Solar Energy Systems, reduction of overall cost of handling by mechanization and improvising efficiency and logistics support.
8. Chief Minister of Haryana lays foundation stone of 'Jai jawan awas Yojana':
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar laid the foundation stone of Jai Jawan Awas Yojna  in Bahadurgarh city Haryana.
  • Khattar was accompanied by Army Chief General Dalbir Singh and Western Army Commander Lieutenant General K.J. Singh.
  • The project is being executed by Army Welfare Housing Organization and aims to provide low-cost housing.
9. Asia’s largest annual security forum Shangri-La Dialogue inaugurates in Singapore:
  • Asia’s largest annual security forum Shangri-La Dialogue was inaugurated in Singapore. 
  • It is the 15th Asia Security Summit to openly discuss and debate security matters in the Asia-Pacific region.
10. Indian Boxing Council gets Affiliation from CBC:
  • The Indian Boxing Council (IBC), a licensing body for professional boxers in the country which has Vijender Singh among others on its roster has been granted affiliation by the Commonwealth Boxing Council(CBC).
  • Indian Boxing Council is a National Boxing Governing body that sanctions professional boxing matches and awards national and subordinate championship titles.
  • It is the first time in India where there is an opportunity for the Boxers to be professional.
